Caput XIII

Where do Dead Weavers Go?

Hartle and Wat’s meanderings with Osbert had got them very nearly ready to kill. Wat was sure that Osbert was breathing, he was still walking around, after all. How he managed to get all the words out while breathing at the same time was more of a mystery. There were words on everything. Every subject under the sun, including the sun itself, got the benefit of Osbert’s detailed opinion.

Old Hemling was just boring, he went on and on about weaving but that was all he talked about. You couldn’t even discuss the weather without the subject being immediately diverted onto a matter of weaving. But it was as if Hemling was an apprentice bore, very capable but only in a limited subject area. Osbert was a Master. He had whole lectures on subjects you didn’t even know existed, just waiting to be let loose.

That would have been bad enough on its own, but it was accompanied by constant complaint that no one ever listened to his opinions. Wat was inclined to report that they were listening right now, as they didn’t have any choice, but he didn’t want to open his mouth; the one saving grace of Osbert’s diatribe being that he didn’t seem to expect any responses.

Their search increased in pace and urgency and they even started asking strangers if they’d seen Master Thomas, or anyone from the guild, come to that.

This got Osbert started on the guild itself, and there was another whole mine of comment and complaint just waiting to be dug out. And it was a very deep mine indeed.

The guild were the worst of the lot when it came to ignoring Osbert’s perfectly reasonable suggestions and ideas. How anyone could be worse than anyone else when it came to ignoring a thing was the sort of question Hermitage would be best put to address. If keeping silent, saying nothing and looking the other way most of the time was not ignoring someone, Wat didn’t know what was. He didn’t know how he could do any more of it, but if someone told him he would give it a go.

The guild ignored letters, entreaties, talks, visits, missives, pleadings and every form of communication open to man, and a few more open only to Osbert. He said that he had told the guild he would be coming to the moot and would meet the Grand Master at a certain time on a certain day, surely there was no way the man could get out of that.

The next thing he knew was that he had been granted a space to deliver a talk on that very day and at that very time. And no, before they asked, the Grand Master had not turned up. Not that Osbert had noticed anyway. Nevertheless, he would be sending the guild a detailed report of his talk along with several of his more advanced thoughts, including diagrams where appropriate.

Wat silently congratulated the Grand Master on neatly avoiding
